A film on surviving and thriving after childhood trauma

Narrated by Rosie Perez

The 12 minute film is available to families, educators and mental health professionals to model how to be a friend just by showing up and sharing.

The story recognizes and honors the time and energy it takes to come through trauma.

"Something Terrible Happened to Joey" is fascinating, moving and clearly on it's way to being something very special for a very wide audience.

— John Hoffman, President, Better World Projects

A lovely, touching, wonderful movie that I’m sure will help children who have experienced tragedy but don’t yet have the emotional vocabulary to express their grief.

— Geof Bartz, ACE at HBO Documentary Films

This film is clearly a masterfully attuned collaboration. The painting technique reinforces our understanding of "process," how everything is becoming. Nothing is static.

— Debbie Waxenberg, PhD. Faculty, NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

In addition to a successful festival run, Something Terrible Happened to Joey will be distributed throughout New York State public education due to a recent collaboration with the New York State Education Department and Office of Mental Health. Additionally, through WNET, the film and its guide will be available through PBS’ online Learning Media.
